In the second round of the Champions Leauge a big derby awaited for Telekom Veszprém against THW Kiel on home court. The guests started the game and Reinkind scored a huge goal, then Pekeler scored two fastbreak goals. Gajic broke the home goal silence in the 4. minute. Sterbik got injured in the first minutes, so Cupara came into the goal. Veszprém played with a lot of mistakes in offense, that was why coach Davis changed in the middle positions, Nenadic and Lauge switched Mackovsek and Mahé in the 8. minute. Pekeler already scored his 4. goal, Veszprém took a timeout at 2-5. Veszprém started to play better and Tönnesen reduced the difference to one goal in powerplay (13. min 5-6)

Nenadic equalised, but after Kiel scored 3 goals in a row. In the 20. minute Jicha also took timeout at 7-9. Landin saved very well and at the end of the first half the guests led by 5 goal. Yahia’s last second goal the result was 13-16 in the break.

 

The second half started with a Veszprém attack and a Landin save. Terzic scored an empty net goal. Both team were a bit nervous and scored back to back the goals. Blagotinsek played well in the wall and scored nice goals. We could see a lot of goals and a lot of 2 minutes suspensions. Kiel increased their lead to 4 goals, but Marguc scored a goal right away (40. min 21-24). Gajic scored by penalty, but Landin was still brilliant in front of the goal. Unfortunately Veszprém made many errors in offense, meanwhile Kiel played patient and tactically good. Davis took his second timeout in the 48. minute at 23-27. Veszprém could not get closer, 7 minutes before the end the Kiel advantage was 5 goal again. Yahia shot huge goals, but these were not enough, because Kiel won the game by 37-31.

 

 

David Davis: Today Kiel was very good in defense, in attack, turnovers and in everything. We started really good and then nothing worked. It was a terrible day for us, probably the worst day since I am here. Now we know where we are, what is our level and this is not where we should be. We keep on the hard work and try to reach the same level where Kiel is.

 

Omar Yahia: First of all congratulation to Kiel, they played fantastic. Unfortunately it was not our day. I hope we learn from the mistakes, we analyse this game tomorrow and try to better for the next time. We should have had to start the games better and we should have had tor un after Kiel in the whole game.

 

 

Filip Jicha: I am really happy with today’s match. I am very satisfied with my team’s performance. Only 48 hours ago we were playing a very important Bundes League game. I am very proud of my players, they did a really great job, especially in the defense. It was very hard to pick one player who was the best. Today’s performance was extraordinary and I hope we can continue to play on this level.

 

Niclas Ekberg: It was an intensive game like always in Veszprém. We had a successful tactic what worked really good for 60 minutes. Like my coach said, it was a real team work. We had good defense and goalkeeper performance, so we could play our game and make fast counter attacks. I am happy for the two points and we try to continue like this.
