A few weeks ago, the Fans voted on the best players of Veszprém’s 43 years of history, position by position. In goal, the four times Hungarian champion and three times Hungarian Cup winner, two times Champions League finalist, furthermore VELUX EHF FINAL4 participant Árpád Sterbik came out on top. We continued our interview series with him.

You were voted into the 43 years All-Star team of Veszprém. What did you feel when the results were published?

It is really honoring for me, because Veszprém has decades of history, in which they had great goalkeepers. Really, it is a huge honor, because they had a Peric, a Svajlen, not to mention Szathmári or Fazekas. Therefore, I was really happy that I got the nomination amongst all these outstanding keepers.

With a bigger gap, you have played in Veszprém for 5 years. What is your favorite memory from this period?

The thing that comes to me first, is the Champions League final from 2001/02 against Magdeburg. it was my first European season, and I got to play in the Champions League, making it all the way to the final.

Besides the success, there must have been bitter moments also. Are there things you cannot recall happily?

Still a vivid memory from last year, in the final against Vardar, unfortunately.

Now that the championships are over, what do you do in your spare time?

Right now, I am gardening, because I just planted my grapes, which I hope to make a vineyard eventually, although I will not see grapes for a long time still. There are a lot of work to do with it, so it takes a lot of time from my day. Of course, I exercise still, and if I had continued my career I would be doing it more intensely. Besides this, I am the babysitter of my children who study at home because of the closed schools, I take care of them and try to help them in learning.

What is your message to Veszprém Fans?

I miss handball just as much as you guys do, but for me, it will not return in Fall, so just hang on for a little bit more!
