Foreshadow: Veszprém – Zaporozhye

Telekom Veszprém will start their run in the VELUX EHF Champions League against Motor Zaporozhye on home court. The game will be broadcasted live by Sport 1.

We have met the Ukrainian champions four times in the European series. Out of those, we have won three times, while Motor could win once. We managed to beat them 44:27 on home court in November of 2013, and then in the away game, we suffered a 26:22 loss. The last time we met them was in the best 16 of the CL in 2016. We won both encounters, first, 24:29 in away, then 41:28 at home. In the home game, Andreas Nilsson scored seven times.

Motor reached the top 16 last year in the Champions League, where they faced the later Final4 participant Kielce. They surprised the Polish team on home court, after reaching a 33:33 draw. The Ukrainians had no luck in away, and got knocked out of the competition with a 34:29 loss. The top scorer of the team in this series was Barys Pukhoski with 87 goals.

This year, Zaporozhye is participating in the SEHA League as well and is currently leading its group in front of Vardar, Vojvodina and Presov with two victories. In their last game, they managed to win the current titleholder of the Champions League, Vardar, 32:31. After two rounds, the top scorer of the team is Barys Pukhoski with eight goals.

Six players have left Zaporozhye over the summer, while welcoming eight arrivals. Sergey Shelmenko, Anton Terekhov, Pawel Paczkowski, Aliakshei Shynkel, Evgeniy Buinenko and Dmytro Tiutiunnyk left the club, while Stanislav Zhukov came from Gummersbach, Pavlo Gurkovsky arrived from Dunarea Calarasi, Dener Jaanimaa came from Lübbecke, Stevan Vujovic left Dobrogea Sud Constanta, Ihor Huryn came from Donbas, while Vladyslav Parovinchak and Eduard Kravchanko arrived from ZNTU-ZAB Zaporozhye.

Telekom Veszprém played in the Hungarian league this Tuesday against Tatabánya. The game ended in a confident 33:22 victory for the “Építők”.
